Lukewarm
The Church of Laodecia - poem by Shari McGriff (2006)
The church of Laodecia
that is the church of today–
lovers of recreation
lovers of more stuff.
Kill the babies
silence our elders
hide our true feelings
cover it up with drugs.
We act like we’re religious
but we’re neither hot
nor ice cold.
we can’t make a quality decision
for the Christ
or they’ll call us a nut.
We listen to false teachers
we’re swayed by every new teaching
don’t we know there is nothing new, under the sun??
We exchange our families for more money
a bigger paycheck at the end of the month
we send our children down the street
to be raised by the adulteress woman
watching soaps in her hut!
And all because we need more stuff!
a bigger house
a bigger car
designer clothes
a dooney and burke bag
hey, we need to look good for our journey into eternity
as God vomits us out of His mouth!
Church!
Wake-up!

*Note: if you find yourself offended by any portion of this poem, go straight to the Word and read something like Luke 18:18-23, which you should find an even more troubling. It was troubling for the disciples, for the wealthy young ruler, and for us. It seems too radical, too abrupt, too ... well, too immoderate to suit our tastes. But it's easy to miss the truth when it is delivered in moderation. The truth, however, can be unmistakable when delivered unvarnished, undiluted. And that kind of powerful truth-telling Jesus is known for.
Again - now straight from the Word-Revelation 3: 15-18
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, `I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.
